Abstract:This is an interview with the Finnish filmmaker Aki Kaurismäki, the leading talent in his country’s miniscule motion-picture industry. Kaurismäki’s films—among them The Match Factory Girl and The Man Without a Past—are straightforward, serio-comic studies infused with a unique sense of the ridiculous and even the absurd. As an interviewee, their maker himself is just such a seriocomic ‘study.’

Johnson, Brian D. (2003):  Cinema as Slow Blues. Maclean’s, 5.5.2003, Vol. 116 Issue 18, p56.Abstract: At the 2002 Cannes Film Festival, ”The Pianist” won the Palme d’ Or. But the critics’ favourite was a much smaller tale of the dispossessed, ”The Man Without a Past”–which won both the runner-up Grand Jury Prize and best actress award. This slice of working-class whimsy from Finnish writer-director Aki Kaurismaki (”Drifting Clouds”, ”The Match Factory Girl”) is a deadpan masterpiece. This is cinema as a slow blues, the story of a man creating his life from scratch, acquiring a dog, a girl, a jacket and tie. And as the narrative picks up a gentle momentum, the film acquires a luminous charm.
